Autumn is the perfect time for a fresh start.
Sober October, what is it?
Sober October is an initiative similar to Dry January: participants abstain from alcohol for the entire month of October. The challenge aims to raise awareness about the effects of alcohol and promote a healthier lifestyle before the holiday season.
The movement also encourages fundraising for various charities, giving participants an extra motivation.
If you may be dependent on alcohol, get medical advice before starting an alcohol-free challenge. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous. See NHS guidance on alcohol-use disorder.
A little history
Sober October was popularised by the British organisation Macmillan Cancer Support in 2014. The initiative started as a way to raise awareness and fundraise to support people with cancer.
The success of Sober October comes from its ability to combine a personal health challenge with a charity cause, encouraging participants to take part not just for themselves, but also for others.
