Halloween, what is it?
Halloween, celebrated every year on October 31st, is a holiday where people dress up as scary creatures, carve pumpkins, and go trick-or-treating. This mysterious night, when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest, invites both kids and adults to dive into a world of playful terror and folklore.
It’s also the perfect opportunity to revisit your classics with original mocktails, a tasty and alcohol-free alternative to traditional party drinks.
A little history
The origins of Halloween go back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated over 2,000 years ago in Ireland, Scotland, and the surrounding regions. Samhain marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter, a time the Celts associated with death. They believed that on the night of October 31st, the spirits of the dead returned to earth; to protect themselves, they lit large bonfires and wore costumes meant to scare away evil spirits.
Over time, Samhain evolved under the influence of Christian traditions. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints' Day, a day to honour saints and martyrs. The night before this celebration became All Hallows' Eve, which eventually turned into Halloween.
In the 19th century, Irish immigrants brought Halloween to the United States, where it took the modern form we know today: a holiday where kids dress up and collect candy, while adults throw costume parties and decorate their homes with spooky themes. This shift made Halloween one of the most popular and commercialised holidays in the world.
The celebration continues to evolve, but it remains rooted in its folklore and superstition origins, balancing ancient traditions with modern festivities. Why not add a touch of modern flair this year with non-alcoholic drinks that will enchant all your guests?
